Washington Women in Need

Washington Women in Need provides fiancial assistance for health care. Focuses on preventive care including physical exams, hearing exams, Pap Smears and mamograms. Does not pay for hospitalizations, cosmetic dentistry, braces or implants. Dental care may include major restorative work. Eye care may include exams and glasses. Assists between 20 and 30 women during each funding cycle. Pays a set fee schedule and the upper limit of the grant is $3,000. MLK Celebration

Revolutionary Forum: MLK Celebration Monday January 18, at 3pm Center House Theater, 305 Harrison Street, Seattle.

Local artists gather to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The show will feature artists of every dicipline, showcasing work that reflects the revolutionary life and words of Dr. King. Free Tax Preparation

Free tax prep will be provided from Jan 12 through April 15, 2010 at sites accross King County in Auburn, Bellevue, Beacon Hill, Seattle's Central District, Downtown Seattle, Federal Way, Kent, Lake City, Rainier Beach, Renton, Seatac, Shoreline and White Center.

The United Way of King County Free Tax Campaign will provide free tax preparation service by more than 550 trained and certified volunteers and electronically filed for a rapid refund. For more information, call 2-1-1.

Referendum 71 Debate Wednesday, Oct. 14,7:30–9pm 1119 8th Ave, Seattle. Referendum 71 is a November ballot measure filed by opponents of same-sex partnerships. The event panel is still taking shape, but, considering the rancor around this issue, expect a balanced conversation including politicians, advocates and citizens from both sides of the issue. Emergency Preparedness Fair

Emergency Preparedness Fair Tuesday, Oct. 20Meadowbrook Community Center10517 35th Ave NE, Seattle. The fair will feature a number of information booths as well as 9 skill-building workshops. There will be hands-on safety demonstrations for earthquake safety and how to store emergency supplies. The fair is also an opportunity to build a safety supply kit as you visit the different exhibitor tables. The fair runs from 10am-2pm. A free lunch will be provided from 11am-1pm.

The CRE allows for those experiencing homelessness to receive a wide variety of much needed services all in one place, in one day. In the past, over 1,000 homeless families and individuals have benefitted from over 80 organizations providing services such as haircuts, medical care, employment services, legal support and much more. New Hopelink Center in Kirkland

Hopelink opened a new Center in the Totem Lake area of Kirkland on August 3. The new site, called "Hopelink Kirkland/Northshore," is located at 11011 120th Avenue NE, Kirkland. It replaces the existing Hopelink locations in the Bridal Trails and Bothell area. This new site offers many more opportunities to clients as a one-stop-shop, including a grocery store model food bank.

Hopelink’s grocery store food bank will mirror a typical grocery store where shoppers can select canned goods, baked goods, produce, meat and dairy items from cases and shelves. The grocery store will be open 25 hours per week with daytime and evening hours. Clients will select the foods right for their families and have the ability to shop the food bank at their convenience.

Additionally, Hopelink is one of the few social services organizations in the area to combine such a wide range of services in one location for the benefit and convenience of people needing help. Hopelink Kirkland/Northshore, serving the Kirkland and Bothell communities, will offer the following services:

Adult Education – one-on-one tutoring for adults in reading, writing and mathematics; preparation for the GED and EDP exams; classes in English as a Second Language, citizenship, workplace literacy, financial management and basic computer skills.

Emergency Financial Assistance – emergency funds to avert eviction or to cover the cost of prescription medications, water service shut-off or bus tickets.

Energy Assistance – financial help to pay household energy bills.

Hopelink Jobs Program – assistance with assessing job skills, planning for pursuing a new career, obtaining skills or education necessary for the chosen career or job, resume-writing and job interviewing, and post-employment consultation and support to ensure on-the-job success.

Family Development – support for families with children needing help to stabilize their situation, including goal setting, budget planning, financial literacy help, credit clean-up support, employment consulting and working towards building long-term assets (home, job skills).
